Download Our FlyerOn 26 October, St John’s Lutheran Church celebrate Reformation Day, and in the spirit of Martin Luther the church must be always reforming, always pointing beyond itself to God’s grace. The temptation is always there to settle for so little: a cozy collective of our most presentable selves, the right side of social issues, pat answers to incomprehensible mysteries of the universe.
Jesus’ invitation is to bring the mess that we’re in, the mess that we are. We are called to show up as our true selves, fears and regrets and doubts and all. God can handle it. The communion of saints – that is, us, the people of God – can handle it. You are loved. You are forgiven. You are free. The truth of God that sets us free first tears us open. Church can and must be a place where we bring our broken-open selves and encounter the healing power of a God who sees us, knows us, loves us as we are, and sets us free.
On Reformation Sunday the clergy wear RED vestments to signify the work of the Spirit. It is also a custom in many churches for the people in the congregation to wear RED for Reformation as well. We invite you to wear RED to remind us of the fire of the Spirit
All Saints Sunday commemorates the baptised people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ. The readings and liturgy call us to remember all who have died in Christ and whose baptism is complete. At the Lord’s table we gather with the faithful of every time and place, trusting that the promises of God will be fulfilled and that all tears will be wiped away in the new Jerusalem.
God’s promises are for today as much as they are for after we die. We trust that baptised into a death like Jesus’ death, we are also baptised into a resurrection like Jesus’ resurrection. In baptism we are clothed with the righteousness of Christ, sealed with the Holy Spirit, and marked with the cross of Christ forever.
All Saints Day isn’t just about remembering those who have died and whose names may be read during worship. All Saints Day is about all the saints, the ones who have gone before, those living now, and those still to come. Today we remember with thanksgiving our brothers and sisters in Christ who have died within the past year, and we also give thanks for the saints who labour and worship on this side of heaven’s gate.
At St John’s on 2 November, we recall and celebrate with those who have gone before us as we gather at the font and the table, where in water and word, wine and bread, God reminds us, “Blessed are you.” We are blessed, and so we live in ways that manifest this blessing for and toward others.
If you have lost someone - friend or family member - this past year, please send their name to Pastor Paul or to Debbie in the Office by October 30 so they can be included in this time of remembrance.
